Lauren Alaina has a country superstar to thank for her new single, "Eighteen Inches" — Carrie Underwood.

Underwood had a hand in writing the song, and it marks the first time one of her co-writes will be released as a single.

"It’s always been really cool when someone else wanted to record one of my songs that I helped write, but to actually possibly hear it on the radio at some point, that’s gonna be really cool, and Lauren is so amazing and does such a great job," Underwood said, according to The Boot.

Since both women got their start on "American Idol," Underwood said she has a unique connection to Alaina.

"I hope in some ways I can maybe be like big sister, you know?" she said. "It’s like, whatever she’s gonna do … I’ve been there, I’ve done that. Maybe I can be like, ‘Stay away from this, and do more of this, and you know, take more pictures!’ "

Alaina couldn’t be happier to have Underwood’s name attached to the song.

Mercury Nashville/19 Recordings/Interscope artist Lauren Alaina will release her new single, “Eighteen Inches,” to radio on July 16. The song was co-written by Carrie Underwood, Kelley Lovelace and Ashley Gorley.

“It's amazing to have an artist like Carrie Underwood, whom I look up to so much write my single,” beamed Alaina. “Kelley, Ashley, and Carrie all did a wonderful job writing such an incredible song. I feel so honored to be able to bring to life the beautiful story within the song.”

ACM Lifting Lives Music Camp is in session this week in Nashville, with campers from around the country participating in a week of activities and excursions around Music City. The residential camp has the dual purpose of studying Williams syndrome and other developmental disabilities and providing music enrichment through performance and education.

On Wednesday, ACM award winner Luke Bryan visited the campers during their recording session, where they recorded their original song, “We’re Having a Party” with producer Paul Worley. The campers wrote the song on Monday with Brett Eldredge and David Lee Murphy. Later that day, Lauren Alaina dropped by and participated in a karaoke event at Winner’s with the campers.

The camp is a partnership between ACM Lifting Lives and Vanderbilt Kennedy Center for Excellence in Developmental Disabilities.

Country artists Lauren Alaina, Big & Rich, Luke Bryan, Brett Eldredgeand Jana Kramer along with hit singer/songwriter David Lee Murphy and renowned producer Paul Worleyhave graciously agreed to volunteer their time with the special-needs campers, at various points throughout the week.

Josh Turner proved his voice was even deeper in the morning, and Lauren Alaina put a hole in the stage as more than 300 hungry country fans got a head-start to CMA Music Festival, in the form of eggs, bacon, coffee and, of course, some great music. The occasion was GAC's Fifth Annual Fan Kick-off Breakfast in the lobby of the Country Music Hall of Fame and Museum on Wednesday morning (June 6), which also featured Kip Moore and Thompson Square.

Hosted by GAC personality Storme Warren, the festivities began at 7:00 AM, but before Lauren and Josh performed, Kip made sure the coffee wasn't the only thing that got the crowd fired up. His set included the multi-week No. 1 single, "Somethin' 'Bout a Truck," and gave attendees their first of several chances to sing along. Thompson Square took the stage next but Keifer Thompson had to be reminded of the first line of their first song, proof perhaps that most musicians aren't early risers. The rest of their performance, which included the duo's hits "I Got You," "Glass" and "Are You Gonna Kiss Me or Not," thankfully went off without a hitch.

Lauren Alaina bounced on stage and enthusiastically greeted fans, delivering the snappy "Tupelo" and a sweet version of the sing-along "Georgia Peaches." She may have been keeping the beat a bit too forcefully, however, as the petite powerhouse soon noticed that her spiked heel had pierced a hole in the stage. The singer laughed it off as a small price to pay for a cute pair of shoes and finished with "Dirt Road Prayer," the closing track on her debut album, Wildflower.

More artists have been added to the Nightly Concerts at LP Field during 2012 CMA Music Festival, featuring two acoustic performance sets each night.

Lauren Alaina is up for the CMT Music Awards’ USA Weekend Breakthrough Video Award for her song Georgia Peaches (directed by David McClister) along with five other nominees. Her video celebrates all things fun and playful in the life of a Southern girl.

Between writing music, recording songs, taking online classes, and preparing her opening act for Sugarland’s “In Your Hands” tour, Alaina took time to chat with USA Weekend about friends, her “sassy” music video, and even her pet turtle.

This is your first major country music award nomination. What was running through your head when you heard the news?
Alaina: You know, every day of my life something new and exciting happens, but when you get nominated for something that you worked really hard on like a music video it’s a really good feeling. That’s our main goal as artists — for people to enjoy what we enjoy doing ourselves.

So how would you describe a group of girls who are “Georgia Peaches”?
Alaina: Oh goodness, I don’t know how to describe this! [laughs] When I was in high school I had a group of girls that I always hung out with and we did everything together. We would go to the mall and the next weekend we’d be at the lake. We’re girly, but we like to be outdoors at the same time. We’re sassy. If you’re from Georgia and you’re a girl you’re called a Georgia Peach.

The mother/daughter comparison in Lauren Alaina's debut single, "Like My Mother Does," was much more than a great gimmick for a video treatment.

It's an accurate reflection of the bond between the "American Idol" runner-up and her mom, Kristy Suddeth.

"The first time she heard it, she cried -- bad," Lauren teased her mom, imitating heaving sobs.

Producers selected from 13 hours of Suddeth family home movies to show how the mom helped shape her daughter's career and instill a love for her home and family.

"That video shows how a child learns from their parent because you see Lauren looking at me and trying to be me. It was really an eye-opener to me. It shows what a big impact as parents we have on our child. It reminds me of my mom," Suddeth said.

Mom and daughter are funny, personable, have the same mannerisms when they laugh and share a deep faith in God. (Suddeth tweets Bible verses to her 1,800 Twitter followers.)

This mom has put her own life on hold for almost two years to travel and support her daughter's blossoming country music career. She lived out of a suitcase more than 300 days last year. She travels as Lauren's chaperone, approves wardrobing to protect her daughter's wholesome image and handles Lauren's finances.

"Everywhere I go, she goes," Lauren said. The singer said even after she turns 18 this year, she still wants her mom by her side on the road.

Ever since Lauren was young she has held a place in her heart for the Special Olympics. Recently Project UNIFY asked her to become an ambassador for this years event where she will play a pivotal role in the encouraging and empowering of all the competitors.

"I am honored to be asked to be an Ambassador for Special Olympics. I have been involved with the local chapter in my hometown since I was in 6th grade. There is nothing that makes me happier or inspires me more than spending time with the athletes.” Alaina said.

Project UNIFY chose Alaina based on her exemplification of the ideals and commitment that the Special Olympics promote, as well as her competitive nature as seen on American Idol.

Throughout her role as an ambassador she will help provide those competing with the knowledge, attitudes, and skills needed to for the various sports. This coaching is done in an effort to give those with intellectual disabilities a chance to be heard and included.

Though she never officially gave her two weeks notice before her career took off on American Idol, she's confident her talents are best behind the microphone and not the pizza cutter. She has a few tricks up her sleeve when it comes to upselling to-go cups, her motto: "You gotta do what you gotta do to get the job done."

In the spirit of Christmas, Lauren Alaina will be giving her time to the benefit Youth In Need by supporting a local St. Charles, Missouri radio station's Boatload of Toys Drive.

This coming Saturday 93.7 The Bull – F.M. will be hosting the toy drive at Bass Pro Shops in St. Charles starting at 1 p.m. Last year they were able to fill three boats with donations, and hosts Remy and Mason are anticipating filling four this time around.

"Lauren Alaina from American Idol is going to be out here. So, we hope that is going to boost some toy-driveness," Remy explained.

Youth In Need has been a thriving organization since the '70s and with a 20,000 service goal for this year, it seems they are continuing to expand and change lives.

In response to the station's involvement, Remy states, "It`s a great way to teach your kids in the family the gift of giving, so, that's what we're about this year and we're pretty excited."

In case you're in St. Charles this Saturday, stop by the Bass Pro Shops to see Lauren Alaina and help her and others make it a merrier Christmas for those in need! Bring one new, unwrapped toy, and drop it in the boat.
