Josh Turner on His New Album and Protégé Scotty McCreery
With four #1 singles and two Grammy Award nominations under his belt, country star Josh Turner is ready to go another round with his latest album, Punching Bag, due out June 12.
Turner, 34, talked to Parade.com about the meaning behind his new album, being a role model toAmerican Idol winner Scotty McCreery, and more.
On his new album, Punching Bag.
"It shows a lot of depth, a lot of maturity, and a lot of experience. It’s been an exciting creative process because I spent two years building a log cabin on my property that is a writer’s cottage. We wrote a lot of songs in there. It was a fun process to be able to create that much fresh material. There's a lot of different kinds of songs on this record that show different sides of who I am as a person and as an artist. There's a gospel song on here, the title track, 'Punching Bag,' which I like to call the country 'Eye of the Tiger,' is a hard-driving song that has inspirational lyrics to it, and the first single 'Time Is Love' is a little more contemporary than anything I’ve done in the past."
On the album's title.
"The idea came from one of those days when everything just kind of blows up in your face and you feel like you’re up against the world. I had one of those really stressful days when I just felt like nothing was going right and it was extremely frustrating. I was venting to my wife and I told her that I just felt like a punching bag. It just struck me funny and it sounded like a song title. I knew that everybody could relate to this song. We’ve all had those days. It’s about being able to take those punches and moving forward. It’s about endurance."
On his songwriting inspiration.
"I’m a very observant person. I’m always paying attention to what’s going on around me and what people are saying. Things that impact me in a certain way, whether it’s something that makes me laugh, something that makes me cry, or something that makes me think. You never know where the inspiration is going to come from. You just always have to be paying attention and ready for it."
On being a role model to last year's American Idol winner, Scotty McCreery — who happened to bring a lot of attention to Josh's hit, "Your Man."
"I got a lot of attention for that. It was great for me because I didn’t have to really work for it! But I couldn’t have asked for a better protégé to be out there singing my music in front of millions of people. He was great. Scotty is just your classic American hometown boy who grew up loving music and family. He has a lot of great values and a great head on his shoulders. I’m really proud of him for doing things the right way and not trying to rush into anything. I know his plate is full right now because he’s finishing up high school, he’s doing the music thing, he’s about to enter college, so he’s got a lot going on. He’s still in that impressionable age where everything is new to him and he’s just learning a lot in a really short time. I think he’s a great role model for a lot of young people out there. I was very grateful that he was a fan of mine. I don’t watch American Idol and when it happened, my phone blew up with text messages and I had to check him out and I followed him throughout the season. It’s pretty wild to see an artist grow up and develop in front of the world. You really open yourself up to a lot of criticism and it takes a special person to be able to do that."
On the changing country music genre.
"I’ve noticed that it’s developing an acceptance among people who aren’t traditionally country music fans. I guess I can credit TV for that and certain artists from other genres who will come in and do a record within the country industry. I think that’s helping out our genre just to be accepted by a bunch of different people."
