SXSW Croud Goes Crazy For Lionel Richie
Entertainment Weekly reviews Lionel Richies performance at SXSW 2012
In the festival’s amusing tradition of assembling strange lineups that don’t exist in real life, this year’s Billboard showcase enlisted none other than Terius Nash to warm up the stage for the evening’s main attraction, Lionel Richie.
“Hello?” Richie teased from off stage as he opened his set with that song‘s classic chorus. Judging by how the crowd erupted, he could’ve just left the venue right then and there and nobody would’ve been mad.
He ended up following through with an insanely entertaining and energetic show. Beaming and improbably lithe, the skinny-pants-ed 62-year-old gave everyone what they wanted (“Easy,” “All Night Long”), plus some things they didn’t know they were allowed to want (a whizzed-up version of “Dancing On the Ceiling” that blended in the riff from Van Halen’s “Jump”).
“All of my friends are backstage,” Richie confessed during a pause, looking genuinely thrilled. “I can see The-Dream backstage,” he added. “But I can’t see The-Dream in L.A. How about that!”
