Why he matters: At a time when mainstream country music typically features pop-centric performers like Taylor Swift and Carrie Underwood, Johnson leads an old-school revival, with traditional sounding songs, his deep, dark baritone, and realistic subject matter (drug addiction, economic depression) on his SPIN-approved 2008 album, That Lonesome Song. He's just completed the follow-up, due later this year.
You should know: After serving in the Marine Corps Reserves for eight years, Johnson first gained notoriety writing songs for other Nashville stars like Trace Adkins, George Strait, and Joe Nichols.
