Jamey Johnson, That Lonesome Song: * * * * -- A country classic
Johnson, whose songs for other artists have ranged from the sublime (George Strait’s Give It Away) to the silly (Trace Adkins’ Honky Tonk Badonkadonk), finally comes into his own with a disc on a par with Waylon Jennings’ great concept albums of the early ’70s. Drawing from his real-life divorce, Johnson writes about marital dissolution with brutally frank introspection and occasional vindictiveness. Two covers, both also recorded by Jennings (The Door Is Always Open and Dreaming My Dreams With You), gracefully add a melancholy touch. Johnson’s songs hit hard, every one of them a keeper — from the cautionary tale about drugs to the one about the music industry — and they’re tied together by the most mournful pedal-steel interludes you’ve ever heard. — Brian Mansfield
